Project “Smart interchange with priority for public transport” was awarded the Product of the Year 2013 in Lithuania (Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists) and awarded a gold medal.
In August 2013, the first in Lithuania smart interchange with priority for public transport has been launched in Kaunas which design had been prepared by “Kelprojektas” and “Fima”.
This interchange in the centre of Kaunas city, on M. K. Čiurlionis Street, had distinguished for especially intensive traffic flows where traffic jams regularly formed – scheduled buses exiting the stops had to cross as many as 6 traffic lanes, what caused dangerous situations each time.
After the reconstruction, a modern traffic light system was installed; it grants a priority with respect to other traffic participants to scheduled busses turning to M. K. Čiurlionis Street. Drivers of busses stopping in this stop have contactless cards. When a bus approaches the interchange, in response to the cards the system stops traffic on M.K. Čiurlionis Street, lights a green signal for the scheduled transport and allows it to pass without hindrance. Besides, a double system is installed in this interchange – if contactless cards do not function, sensors installed in the asphalt pavement stop the heavy-weight transport near the bus stop.
