We continue the Kelprojektas employee interview rubric Komanda@Kelprojektas, where we continue to talk to colleagues about work, achievements, development and motivation.
This time we interviewed Andrejus Samuchovas, the Geotechnical Project Manager of the Geology Survey Business Unit.
Let’s start from the beginning, you have been working at “Kelprojektas” for 19 years. How was your fascination with the field of environmental protection born?
It wasn’t that I chose geology as a field of study out of vocation or fascination. According to everything, I should have been a qualified firefighter, but fate decided that I entered Vilnius University, Faculty of Natural Sciences, where after 6 years of studies I obtained a master’s degree in Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology. Fascination with geology came during studies. Studying geological science is really specific, interesting, active and not boring and as a nature lover, I found what I needed.
How did your career develop further?
During his studies, in 2003, after the 3rd year, the then head of the Research Department of “Kelprojektas” Juozas Končius invited me to do a 3-month production internship in the summer. A year later, after completing his undergraduate studies, the company offered to come back. Since during the internship I met a fantastic team and a great teacher, head of department Saulius Gegieckas, I moved from Vilnius to Kaunas without hesitation, where I am still loyal to “Kelprojektas”.
Tell us, why you are fascinated and motivated by working at “Kelprojektas”?
I won’t lie, after two decades at “Kelprojektas”, it’s hard to motivate yourself, whether you like it or not, everything becomes routine. But while working at “Kelprojektas”, extraordinary projects keep coming up that interest and engage. It is probably motivated by that pleasant feeling when you successfully implement such projects and put the final signature. For me, it’s like a last-second three-pointer.
What personal, character skills are needed in this job?
Any project is not complete without constant communication with the builder, designer, various institutions, therefore, I think one of the main characteristics should be communication. The work of a geologist is not easy, one must be hardworking and patient. I was very lucky with the team, everyone is positive, so I think positivity also contributes a lot to successful work.
Remember what are the biggest projects you have worked on and what are you currently working on?
There were certainly quite a few projects, but the ones that stick in my memory the most are: A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda 304.5 km reconstruction of the Jakai junction, LNG terminal, main road E67 Tallinn-Parnu, reconstruction of the Kaunas railway tunnel, Kėdainiai bridge in Kaunas, national main road A1 Vilnius -Kaunas-Klaipėda bridges over the Neris river 99.99 and 100.00 km, Baltijos pr. roundabouts in Klaipėda reconstruction, construction project of the cultural building (library) in Biržai, J. Bielinio g., railway line Jonava – Radviliškis – Šiauliai.
And what does your free time look like? What are your hobbies and activities after work?
My free time and activity after work is family. And I don’t have any particular hobby and I often change them. I probably played basketball for the longest time and now I play sometimes. Also I like outdoor tennis, skiing, volleyball, swimming and fishing.
