International team from across the Tyréns Group helps win Vilnius Airport design competition

Zaha Hadid Architects has been selected as the winner of an international architectural competition to design the new T5 arrivals terminal buildings at Vilnius Airport. The winning proposal is designed for expanding passenger capacity and a better passenger experience, while keeping sustainable principles at the forefront.

An international team from across the Tyréns Group, including Hilson Moran and Tyrens Lietuva (Lithuania), contributed to the structural engineering, MEP engineering and sustainable design of the terminal, in addition to its masterplanning and traffic solutions for public transportation, cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

“The design incorporates Tyréns’ interdisciplinary expertise as a leader in structural engineering and sustainable building technologies. The new arrivals terminal reflects Tyréns’ commitment to delivering sustainable engineering and design services that build lasting value for future generations,” said Agnė Peikštenienė, Tyréns project lead.

It was all hands on deck when Tyréns Group kicked off its collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects. Over three intense months, Tyréns Group employees in Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, the United Kingdom and Sweden joined forces on traffic planning, structural engineering and energy solutions.

One of the contributors was Kayin Dawoodi, Tyréns design lead and structural engineer: “Our ambition was to embed as much sustainable design logic as possible, through proactive collaboration. Examples of this include studying a variety of geometric configurations for structural and energy efficiency, landing on a form that optimises a folded-plate-style roof, with integrated skylights for daylighting.” says Kayin Dawoodi.

When it comes to transport and passenger mobility, the interfaces between the new section and the existing terminals have been a key focal point. It has also involved finding new transport solutions to and from the airport.

“Tyréns Group have truly carried out this work together as a team. Collaboration across different countries and disciplines, together with strong leadership support, has been key to our success,” says Kayin Dawoodi, summarising. “We need to understand the architect’s design process to better deliver on the engineering. We very much hope to continue this collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects and the wider Tyréns Group to create additional value during the upcoming design and construction phases.”

Brief overview of the terminal and airport development

The Vilnius Airport Arrivals Terminal is integral to the city’s long-term masterplan to enhance Lithuania’s regional and global connectivity over the coming 30 years. The design incorporates architectural solutions to meet future aviation technology and passenger demand.

Supporting Vilnius Airport’s role as Lithuania’s main gateway and a fully integrated air, rail and road transportation hub for the Baltic region, the airport’s enhanced capacity will enable direct flights that connect Vilnius with many new destinations, contributing to the local economy while improving the country’s global accessibility.
